Historic Route 66: New Mexico

The Blue Swallow Court, as it was originally called, was open and operating with ten rooms sometime in 1940.The Motel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

In New Mexico, Route 66 dips, curves, and winds across arid rangeland, mesas, railroad towns, tribal communities, and National Monuments. Settlements were established according to topography and availability of water and are usually separated by many miles. The area is renowned for its cultural diversity and rich mixing of tribal, Spanish, and American history.

We are dedicated to the education, promotion, and preservation of the New Mexico Historic Route 66 Scenic Byway ​and the economic revitalization along its 604 mile stretch throughout the state since 1989.

Pecos Pueblo thrived from around 1350 C.E. until 1838 C.E. Archaeologists believe the pueblo site, comprising a north and a south pueblo unit, had around 1000 rooms and at its height was home to about 2000 individuals.
