Wonderful history of the development of mail service between California and the United States east of the Rockies. The mail came first by ship, than stagecoach, the pony express and eventually the train. Explains the different routes used.

There are museums, historic sites, churches, and original trail segments located all along the length of the trail.

he National Pony Express Association is dedicated to the preservation of the Pony Express National Historic Trail, its sites and its history.

Made of leather, with four pockets, or cantinas, the Pony Express mochilas were used to hold mail. Riders sat on the mochila-covered saddle. Openings cut into the leather allowed it to fit over the saddle horn and cantle.
