Primary Sources - Defined

Primary sources provide direct evidence or firsthand testimony regarding a question or topic under investigation. Such sources are produced by those who experienced or witnessed the events documented. Typically the sources are created at the time the events are happening. Primary sources include, but are not limited to, diaries, speeches, news film footage, letters, interviews, autobiographies, pamphlets, meeting notes, official records, contemporary sketches, photographs, contemporary newspaper articles, manuscripts. Primary sources can include oral histories, memoirs and autobiographies recorded later. In addition, relics or artifacts such as buildings, clothing or furniture, as well as creative works such as art, music, drama, novels and poetry can be primary sources.
