1904 St. Louis Olympics: Cycling

Cycling

The cycling events occurred on August 2nd-5th. There were seven events total divided into three categories:

  • Sprint events
    • ¼ mile
    • ⅓ mile
    • ½ mile
  • Middle distance events
    • 1 mile
    • 2 miles
    • 5 miles
  • Long distance event
    • 25 miles

All races took place on the stadium track in which one lap equaled ⅓ of a mile. The track was described by Bicycling World Magazine as “a track of cinders, flat as a billiard table, very dry and dusty.” There were not many spectators at this event, and only Americans competed.

A man named Burton Downing competed in all seven events and medaled in six of them. Another athlete, Marcus Hurley, won four gold medals.

An athlete from Springfield, IL named J. Nash McCrea had a wild style of riding. He was nicknamed "Crash McCrea" because he rode all over the track, which made him dangerous. During the 5 mile race, on the second-to-last lap, McCrea swerved into the cyclist beside him, who then ran into the two riders next to him. All four athletes went down. Four more races behind them couldn't avoid the pile of racers and also fell.

In the 25 mile race, only 4 out of 10 riders finished due to flat tires.
