Dyslexia and Print Disability Resources: Library Resources

Resources for patrons who have a print disability and for patrons, parents, and teachers who have people with a print disability in their lives.

Introduction

In addition to our vast collection of accessible databases, the St. Louis County Library has several other resources available to patrons with print disabilities. Our catalog is filled with different types of audio books as well as large print books. The information below explains the different book formats available as well as how to find them.

Use the search box below to find items in our catalog.

Filter Catalog Results by Book Format

To find a book in a specific format, follow the instructions below. Not all books are available in all formats.

1. From the St. Louis County Library homepage (www.slcl.org) or from the search box to the left, type the title of the book you want.

2. A menu called "Refine Results" appears on the left side of the screen. Scroll down that menu until you see the Format options.

3. If more than a few formats are available, you will see an option to show More Formats. Click that option.

4. Choose the format option you would like by checking the box next to the kind of book. Filter by Nonmusical Sound Recording to see results for Playaways.

5. Click Apply.

6. If an eBook or eAudiobook is available, the results will show you in which app the book can be found. Books in Overdrive can be borrowed through the Libby app or downloaded to your Kindle or computer. Books in Hoopla can be borrowed through the Hoopla app. Playaways show up as Nonmusical Sound Recordings.

Book Formats

Audiobooks

Audiobooks are books that have been recorded onto a physical device. The library primarily has audiobooks on CDs.

eAudiobooks

eAudiobooks are audiobooks that can be downloaded and listened to on a device. The St. Louis County Library has two apps for browsing and listening to eAudiobooks: Libby by Overdrive and Hoopla. Note: Hoopla is available only to residents of the St. Louis County Library Tax district and to those who have purchased a Non-Resident Metro Library Card.

eBook

eBooks are traditional digital books. Depending on the book's format and your device for reading it, the book may or may not be accessible.

Large Print

These books generally have a font size of at least 16-18 point type.

Playaway

Playaway devices are plug and play books. Simply plug the device into your own set of wired headphones or use your own car adapter to plug it into your car's sound system. Then hit play! Playaways do NOT pair with bluetooth.
