Dyslexia and Print Disability Resources: DBs & Screen Readers

Resources for patrons who have a print disability and for patrons, parents, and teachers who have people with a print disability in their lives.

Introduction

Not all of the databases at the library have accessibility features built into them. However, quite a few databases without the features are designed to work well with screen readers. The databases on this page are generally screen-reader friendly, or parts of them are screen-reader friendly. See the accessibility note at the end of each database description.

NOTE: Many of the databases at the library contain articles in PDF format. PDFs can be built two different ways. PDFs designed for electronic use are often -- but not always -- made accessible behind the scenes. When a PDF is accessible, a screen reader or braille output device can "see" the words and images. Poorly designed electronic-use PDFs and PDFs designed just to be printed are essentially like photographs to screen readers. Screen readers cannot "see" that the images on the page are actually text. As a result, a screen reader may or may not be able to read PDF documents found in these databases, depending on how they were designed.
