Outer Space for Kids: Galaxies

Learn about the solar system, Kepler's laws, space exploration, stargazing, and more!

Galaxy Intro

" Galaxy is a vast system of stars, gas, dust, and other matter held together in space by their mutual gravitational pull. The sun and hundreds of billions of other stars belong to our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Our galaxy takes its name from its appearance as a hazy, “milky” band stretching across the night sky. In fact, the word galaxy comes from the Greek word for milk. World Book Student

Types of Galaxies

Galaxies are categorized based on their shapes or by what is happening at their center. Spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are flat with lots of stars at the middle creating a bulge and spiral arms that radiate outward. Elliptical galaxies are round or oval. The stars in elliptical galaxies are typically older than those in spiral galaxies, and they orbit around the core going different ways. Lenticular galaxies are a cross between spiral and elliptical galaxies. They have a bulge in the middle but no spiraling arms. The stars in lenticular galaxies are often older, similar to stars in elliptical galaxies. Irregular galaxies come in many different shapes and sizes. Scientists believe irregular galaxies are the result of two galaxies interacting or colliding with each other.
